8 Hours … 9 minutes … left of 2019!

21 minutes until our “New Year’s Eve” Happy Hour.    Trying to put a “shell” around the year of 2019 is just impossible.   Immediately, Pete’s passing comes to mind.   There is nothing left in 2019 that matches that !!!   I have tried to stay away from Pete’s passing as I write this BLOG.   Once his passing enters my mind, all else is dull.   I find myself stopped at the stage of being ready to share something with him and knowing that he is not here.  It is “OK” … not really!!!   But I certainly cannot change it.

8 minutes to our “happy hour.” ... glass of wine and snacks … the snacks are fixed by the kitchen and are really quite nice.

2020:  Dentist Thursday, Jan 2nd … tooth pulled to prevent future problems … at my age, I wonder about such!!!   But (three) dentists and Craig say we should do that.   Maybe too much consulting!!!   Tuesday, Jan 9th … I have my first radiation treatment on the Cancer at the tip of my nose.

(Back to my BLOG … from our NYE Happy Hour!!!)

Yes … the Cancer on the tip of my nose … this phrase sounds like what a writer would create as a  storyline so there is no fear raised in the reader!!!   From someone who does have a Cancer at the tip of her nose … it seems true and totally ridiculous … I feel like a joke when I say the phrase:  cancer on the tip of my nose.

The guess is that I should need 7 to 8 treatments … two a week!!!

I am thinking January for the treatments;  February for my nose to heal … when the treatments stop,  the cancer finishes its healing from the inside.   I am thinking end of February for the healing.   Our family “senior” reunion… could then be around the end of February.   I would then have my right knee replaced … with my left knee replacement next!!!   The knee replacements’ schedule is all speculative ,,, my hip doctor also does knees, so I will use him for my knees … my left hip is great.

At this current time, I have no big occasions in my mind.  We shall just have to see … I think of all of you from Louisiana and Webster so much … and miss you!!! I am wishing all of you a most lovely and blessed 2020 …  make it healthy and joyful, also!!!

Love y.all … and Happy New Year …

(6 hours and 41 minutes of 2019 still with us!!!)

A Most Blessed Person … I Am.

When I thought of starting this essay … the title just came out.   And the rich memories have just filled me ... memories … in a minute … but, now, a “telling” of how my great day started.  Craig and I went to TARGET!!!    Now, for a few of my sophisticated readers, this may not deserve CAPS, and BOLD, and ITALICS.   I do not think I have been to Target … much less shopping … for a long time … and with Craig!   Usually Craig gets me whatever I need … or I order from Amazon.   It was a total delight to walk the Target ailes — no matter what lists I write for Craig, I always forget something … a “cucumber – mint” sparking water,  a “grapefruit”  sparking water,  “plain” hummus,  “cuties” … cross between satsumas and tangerines!!!  Craig and I returned to the apartment … and decided to have Christmas then.   (Just filled my second glass of wine while writing this essay … a really fine Cabernet from my brother — with pieces of the “Cuties” for even more smiles — my smiles!!!)

So, Craig and I did Christmas this morning.   It was wonderful … he was a better Santa then I was!!!  I have a beautiful bracelet … Craig has my style … always from Art Shows here — and simple and beautiful.  I showed a picture of the bracelet last year — I will try to get this one shown by picture.   Craig managed also to find me a multitude of the ribbons I wear in my hair — and a darling mirror and plaque for my living room … I will smile every time I walk by it.   As I said, I did not do that well for him … we shall see.

The memories … a student I loved dearly … who is not with us … a letter from her parents … a reason to believe and be thankful; a friend from the lake … how I miss the lake!!! … and the people;  a beautiful math/computer science major at Southern Illinois … whose oldest child is entering college; and  my lovely and beautiful roommate from my college years.

And … new memories … at least, the people involved are from this where-abouts.

New memories:   a lovely woman and her friend … whom I met here … and who brought me candy last night at dinner … how thoughtful … she knew I would cherish the thought.

Did my 2400 feet today — and stopped in and visited a friend at turn 2300!!!  One of our fabulous bridge players who has not been feeling well.  She is 101 years old and is probably our best bridge player here.   She just had not been feeling well … and it is not like her.  I pass her apartment as I walk … we had a good visit … they changed her medicine, and she is much better … and going to grandchildren for dinner today — and another group from family from dinner tomorrow.   That is good.

Tomorrow … dinner out at the home of a friend and her son.  Her son is the “handsome” man who is my driver so often … and she is … I consider her a friend … so wonderful to have at this stage of being away from ones who were … and are … friends.  I could not convince her that I wanted to do something  to help with dinner … so wine, cookies, and candies!!!    I am looking so forward to the time spent with them.

The best of all my wishes to family and friends … have a wonderful holiday!!!

Love y’all .

Happy Holidays!

Can’t find the perfect “place” from which to start this essay!!!   I love y’all who are with me in this BLOG … friends and family who use this BLOG as a way for us to stay in touch.  What does it mean to “celebrate” a Holiday … a Christmas!!!  Thanks to Craig, there is a small little tree in my office … and two presents under it!!!   Stephie gave me the tree the first Christmas Pete and I were in Denver.  The Memories!!!   Early Christmases!!!   I am trying to remember how we celebrated Christmas when Lori and Craig were young.  I know we opened presents on Christmas Morning.   I am guessing that Pete cooked the Christmas Dinner … I am thinking that we might have spent Christmases with my mother … and with my sister and her family.   I don’t remember … it has all blended together without dates!!!

Christmases changed after the grandchildren came … at first Pete and I stayed with Lori and her family over the Christmas visit.   In 2003, Pete bought the place in Wisconsin … on Bonner Lake.   Since I had about mid-December to mid-January as my vacation, it became our practice to spend that time in Wisconsin (at the lake!!!) ... and visit Lori and the grands when it was good.  I am remembering my starting the habit of one day per grand-child … at the Mall of America … buying whatever they wanted.   This habit started early when I realized that I did not know enough about what each would want.   I remember the scenes of each of the children trying on clothes, choosing lunch … always that restaurant with all the fish and animals.   I loved it — it was my Christmas gift from the grandchildren!!!

Memories!!!

Christmas, 2017, we are in Denver!!!  Pete was not comfortable going out … so we ate Christmas dinner in the dining room in the Assisted Living complex … and the day after Christmas, Craig and Stephie would bring over a full course Christmas dinner.  This year I will eat dinner in our dining room … and I am sure Craig and I will do an appropriate dinner later.   We must allow time on Christmas to open presents … I surely hope Craig’s come in time.  Love y’all … enjoy time with family and friends … good memories …

Love y’all … Happy Holidays

I Added 400!!

Sometime last week I added 400 ft to my daily walking!!!  That means another walk from my apartment door to the end of the hallway and back to my apartment door — 200 feet from my apartment door to the end of the hallway!!!   So I am now at 12 “laps.”   A lap is from my apartment door or back!!!   OR .4124  (rounded up)  of a mile!!!   And I am sure I could continue this paragraph to the disdane of any readers!!!

As I sat down to write this essay … I began an outline of what has happened this month — and I cannot believe that it has been a month since I wrote in this BLOG!!!

One of the best ... a visit from Brenna … granddaughter!!!   She has a friend in Golden (Colorado) … Brenna stayed with her — and we visited quite a bit..   On the Friday —Craig drove Brenna and me up to Boulder — home of University of Colorado — Brenna was interested in a grad school that would get her a degree in family care … I am sure I messed up the name of the degree, but you get the idea!!!   It does happen that she could be in the area a few summers … I, of course, smiled!!!

Sunday Brenna, friend, and I did a brunch at one of my favorite such places in Denver — we walked through Golden — and I got home early afternoon … just in time for more football games.

Of course, Stephie in, is another one of the best here for me.   She got in really late Monday night … and Tuesday was probably the worst snow day Denver has had this year.   We had one item on the agenda for Wednesday when Stephie was here … get my glasses.   With my cataracts removed and the glaucoma, I needed a new pair of glasses … really both near and far “tweeked.”   We went to a really neat place downtown … Stephie did some work while we shopped for “office” glasses and “sun” glasses.   Craig was a suberb help…

Since we were downtown we went to one of Craig’s and Stephanie’s favorite restaurants down town…Motto: “ if you do not like garlic, do not come here.”   Seriously … and the food was so good … not “garliky” but GOOD!!!!

Next day was Thanksgiving … Craig and Stephanie were doing the dinner … and I went to Craig’s house sort of mid-afternoon … sat and watched football and got to know the cats!!!   The cats are darling … there are four of them … well behaved, beautiful, big, hair about 2 inches long, well-groomed … they are called “ragdolls”.. I really liked them!!!  Dinner was great … the turkey was perfect … Craig cooked it upside down … like his father always did … but I don’t think Craig remembered that far back!!!   The side dishes were really great also … a new corn dish …superb … I can’t wait until next Thanksgiving!!!  Also had dressing, gravy, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, rolls … and Craig baked a really good pecan pie the next day!!!

Stephie left late Saturday night … so we did the last couple days doing anything she wanted to get done while here.

Life, this week, has returned to normal … I was ready to write “boring” … but really not.   Saturday and Sunday are watching football;   Monday and Wednesday are write on this BLOG, wash hair, and … I am sure … other things.  Tuesday morning is bridge… This coming Friday is Bridge morning … four of us have merged so nicely into a group that likes to play bridge together.   They played in my room last time … I will see what they want to do this Saturday.

The Monet showing is here … I saw it on Friday, the 8th of November and … again on the 15th.  The 8th was sponsored by St. Louis University … but turned out to be just a viewing of the paintings alone.   I had thought it would be a session on Monet.   I did enjoy the second viewing — with Craig.   It was so wonderful to see such a collection of Monet’s paintings ,,, and discuss them afterwards.  I found out I really like one of Monet’s paintings of poplars.   Jim’s mother, Kay, went with me for the first viewing … it is wonderful to have someone outside my usual circle.

Finished my glass of wine … and finished my notes … maybe should mention we are investigating how best to handle the cancer on the tip of my nose.   Thanks to family, we have two doctors who do the radiation romoval of a cancer.  We will listen to both … and I am trying to get in touch with the one doctor who did Craig’s MOHS on his nose!!!

It is a dreary evening …expecting some rain and snow.

Love y’all …

Win Is When … and Has is Had

I just re-read my immediately previous essay ... found mistakes ... and the title to this essay should correct two of the mistakes!!!

I was going to title this essay “2000 feet.”   I just finished my walking for the day … my 2000 feet!!!   But, I thought the above title was “cuter.”   The “2000 feet” expression was explained at the end of the (same) previous essay.   To be redundant:   2000 feet is the amount of walking I am now trying to do daily.   BTW, it took me 26.07 minutes to do the walking today … not really … when I just reached to turn the app back on, it turned on itself and added a few more seconds to my time.   Using 26.07, my average pace was 51.25 miles / hour.   I used 77 calories!!!

(Question:   Is miles / hour a “reasonable” unit for my walking?   I first typed in feet / sec and then thought about that.   51.25 feet per second would have my walking quite fast!!!)

I spent this past Saturday and Sunday in my bed.   I have a bad head-cold and am so uncomfortable.   But, that is OK when football is on … college football on Saturday and professional on Sunday … with an extra college game on Friday … and an extra pro game this evening.   I love it!!!   I am especially following the SEC games for College.   I really do like Alabama … and I have no idea what is motivating LSU … they were running 2nd in a college poll on today’s television!!!   Of course, we are following the Denver Broncos (past Thursday night on TV).   The game last Thursday was embarrassing!!!  I am trying to follow the Saints … this past game was nationally shown … so, we were able to see it.   I love little Bridgewater … I followed him in Minnesota.   I also like the Cowboys since their quarterback is from Southern Mississippi!!!   The Packers play tonight … and they are also one of my favorites.    Pete loved football … and I started watching it with him … about 50 years of watching footballl leaves some memories!!!    I think I said this before … “Sunday afternoon, Pete did popcorn … and we usually ordered in pizza!!!”

Got a lovely phone call from a past student this Saturday evening.  It was Homecoming at Southeastern Louisiana University.   David … the caller … suggested quite strongly that I visit Southeastern next year for homecoming.   There are several people I would love to see again.

It is a most beautiful afternoon.   Denver sun … with snow predicted in the mountains this coming Wednesday and Thursday.   I am beginning to understand Denver weather.  There is that difference in weather between the weather in the mountains and the weather at 5000 feet.   If the weather is coming from the West, it has to get over the mountains before it affects us.   So — we are late in getting a change in the weather … or we get no change … if the mountains stop the winds … which bring the change in weather.   I really think I will become a weather-person in my next life… NOT saying the weather on television … but using mathematics to figure out those curves that changes in  the weather follow!!!

It is time for dinner … never want to lose someone cooking for me!!!  I have a couple doctor appointments this week.   Jim is taking me.  Would anyone out there want to visit Denver and join me in seeing the Monet exhibit?   I will see the exhibit a couple times during November … so I can let you know if  I think it is good.  The exhibit is only shown in Denver in the States.   I think it has to be a good experience!!!

Think about it.

Love y’all.

I Almost Said, “No. Thank You.”

My life is really more like “Groundhog Day” than like the old movie that had John Belosi and others as part of a College Fraternity!!!   I just do not have a lot of unplanned events in my life!   But, I had one last night (Wednesday, October 2nd)thanks to an absolutely lovely woman … and if I had not been so tired I would have written aboout it last night!!!

After that introduction, the actual event may not live up to the introduction... but, it certainly does to me.

I spent all of yesterday … Wednesday, October 2nd, … until 3:30 PM … doing basically nothing.   Not really … Craig stopped in mid-morning … and we discussed his classes … and students.   My birthday is coming up so we made plans for Lunch Out on the 14th (October) … Craig’s birthday is the 28th of this month … and we settled on his birthday present.   I also made plans to do Dinner Out with Kay on this coming Monday.   Kay is Jim’s Mother … a fabulous woman in her own right.   Jim is basically a driver for residents of this complex … he is a retired member of the Denver Sheriff’s Department … so a very comfortable man to be with … and, really, very good looking!!!  At 3:00 I went down to the Concierge Desk … to meet Jim … he was taking me to my nail appointment.  Of course … when I thought … I knew that 3:00 was too soon for a 3:45 appointment … checked my text notes … and, of course, Jim had said 3:30.

Jim shows up about 5 minutes late … of course, being me, I texted him to see if he had forgotten me … “He was on his way.”  And, was running a little late because the passenger before me was about 10 minutes late at the Doctors …  and the passenger was “Jimmy.”   I forget Jimmy’s last name.  Jimmy is at the Independent Living part of this complex … Jimmy spent a good part of his life in the fashion industry in New York City.   Before beautiful clothes were shared through photographs, the fashion industry used artists to capture the models and clothes.   And, Jimmy was one of the best … all the fashion houses at that time wanted Jimmy … just some months ago our Denver Art Museum had a showing of some of Jimmy’s drawings … at least three rooms full … the drawings of the 70’s — 80’s … I recognized the styles … and loved the exhibit.  (That was win I first met Jimmy.)  Anyway, I soon did not worry about being late for my nails … and had a wonderful conversation with Jimmy.

Did my nail appointment in good time … Hana always runs around three hours on my nails … and Jim (the driver … not Jimmy!!!) had a passenger to take downtown around 6:15  … so Hana said she would take me home … I live just about 10 minutes from the Nail Shop … so “wonderful” … Jim did not have to worry about timing.  As Hana gets close to finishing my nails, she asked me, “Do you like Viet Nam food?”   Of course I do.   Hana asks, “Do you (me) want to join her for dinner?   It is close by.”  This is where my first reaction was, “No.  Thank you.  I have naan and hummus in my room.”   Plenty for me!!!  And, then, I thought of Lori and Brenna … traveling all over the world .. and I am thinking of  saying . “NO” to a lovely invitation to a Viet Nam restaurant.   Seriously???  So, I said, “I would love to go with you (Hana) to a Viet Nam restaurant for dinner.”

We went to “Belmar Asia” … just around the corner.   Many of the staff knew Hana.   We sat down, and Hana described the foods on the menu.   She suggested each of us order a “Rice and Noodle Bowl.”   I ordered a Thai Tea for me … Hana ordered a strawberry-flavored drink for herself!!!   The first item that appeared on our table — is a bowl of what looks like soup.   As I lift the bowl to take a first sip, Hana quickly tells me that the bowl contains fish sauce … and various other flavors … making it very tasteful!!!   It is to season our Rice and Noodle bowl if we want.   Hana is a lovely host and guide … and I loved the entire dinner.   I had enough food left to take home for my dinner the next day!!!   And, the Rice and Noodle bowl was as good the second day as the first!!!

That experience has totally influenced me these last two days.  I had my hair cut … not that much … and colored yesterday.   Very much assured that Lauren … a new girl … would do what I needed … and she did!!!   I has Physical Therapy this morning … and followed that by my walking … 2000 feet today.   I had been doing my 1600 feet enough to increase my total walking steps by another 400 feet!!!  So I am at 2000 feet for a few days … until I get comfortable with that much walking!!!   And, in between writing on this essay, I went to our “happy hour.”   I had a lovely glass of wine. homemade pretzels, sausages … and an opportunity to talk to several other residents.   It was nice.   I am close to finishing this essay … and I might even fix me another glass of wine!!!

Want to mention just a couple things.   I have been avoiding any negative happenings because I do not want any audience I have to worry.   But a couple things have occured that I think I maybe should communicate to my readers.   On my right eye … the vision has decreased since the day after the cataract was removed.  We shall watch it.   On the tip of my nose… yes, the tip of my nose ..., there is a cm x 2 cm size growth — under the skin … from which we shall take a scraping this coming Friday.   We shall see … I will let you know.

It is a beautiful day in Denver.   My right knee is unhappy … maybe I have another item to worry about!!!  Everybody … take care of yourselves.

Love y’all.

My Life Is Not That Interesting!!!

I don’t know why I thought my life would continue to motivate  a BLOG.   I do want to keep sharing my life through this BLOG … it keeps me in touch with family and friends.  For example, I just this week received a note from a Southeastern student … who had become a dear friend in Hammond … but whom I lost with my moving.   She found my BLOG … we are back in touch.   We always did “Olive Gardens” when we were both in Hammond.  Shantae, “If you are reading this, I miss your company!!!.  I miss our conversations!!!”

Just fixed myself that wonderful cup of coffee … it really is !!!.

Our Beautiful Brenna … granddaughter … is coming to visit me/Craig/Denver … the beginning of November.   I am so thrilled.   She has a friend in Golden, Colorado, with whom she will stay.   Remember, Golden, Colorado, is probably my favorite city around here.   The town is a lovely older section of a city in the Hills/Mountains, that has been kept interesting for visitors … shops, restaurants … all really to my taste!!!   Also, home to Colorado School of Mines … and COORS BEER.   Golden is where the shop “The Blue Moose” is located.  I can usually count on their having sweatshirts, t-shirts … and socks … for family and friends … especially socks for our Beautiful Brenna!!!   We will have to plan a shopping trip in Golden when Brenna is here!!!

Next week, I will try to put myself back together.   I am doing the regular run of M.D. appointments … AND … getting my nails and hair done.   My nails will be the usual … I have a precious girl who always does my nails so well … since I basically do nothing, my nails stay looking nice for a good time.   My hair is going to get a little heavier blonde lighlights … and several inches cut off the back … I want to keep it in a knot on top of my head …. but it needs to have some cut off…about three years ago was the last time Noland cut it … in Hammond !

How about a paragragh on hair and nails to show you the highlights of my life!!!

Lori is finishing her walk in Northern France … the French part of the El Camino.   She has a marvelous BLOG relating this walk … she does indicate that her time in France … outside of Paris … has caused her to think more fondly of the French people.   Craig is five weeks into his teaching at Red Rocks Community College (Denver).   He should have a BLOG on coming from the Business World into Community College teaching.   He would not have the time to write it … he is certainly seeing how teaching can take over your whole life!!!   As I have indicated before, our discussions of teaching  mathematics have added an extra special element to my life … that I never would have thought I would have!!!

I played bridge this morning with the Independent Living (IL) people.   I really do enjoy them.   I even participated in an Assisted Living (AL) “Penny Auction” the other day.   Our Activity Leader pulled together several items that could be of interest to AL people.  Each AL person was given 10 pennies … to use to bid on the items.   One of my absolute favorite IL people, Ann, was the auctioneer … honestly, professionally trained in another life!!   She was great … and the whole activity was darling.   I have a set of lovely note cards … on the cards:  “Teach, love, inspire”,  and a couple fruit-shapped wooden “dust catchers.”    Precious!!!

No… it is not a mentally challenging life … but it is open to what you want it to be!!!  If you want mentally challenging, make it be  … thank goodness if you can.   If not, watch football … Saturday afternoon College Football!!!

Love y’all.
